  Traditional ion exchange system for water purification is mainly used mixed bed column loading conventional ion exchange bead resins. Chemical regeneration process was required after breakthrough of resins, consequently chemical waste were generated.
  Recently widespread Electro De-Ionization (EDI) system is comprised of combining electro dialysis and ion exchange. Principle of EDI is that ion exchange bead resins are packed into de-ionization compartment of EDI stack, and ionic impurities in feed water are continuously removed toward each concentration compartment across ion permeable membranes under impressed direct current of electricity. Therefore there is no need to use chemicals for regenerating ion exchangers.
  Ebara Research has been developing an original and novel GDI system (GDI; Graft De-Ionization) with high efficiency of de-ionization and compact stack using ion-exchangeable non-woven fabrics and ion-conductive spacers produced by radiation grafting process instead of employing conventional bead resins and inert screen spacers. The GDI can be installed as major apparatus of ultra pure water production system, and eventually GDI can be widely applied to pure water supplying system for fossil & nuclear power generating industry, semi-conductor industry, medical & pharmaceutical industry, food & beverage industry and so on.
